Enjoying the outdoors with your dog

12063471_10153233216531245_450704497950060036_nIf you’re like me and had an eventful summer, looking forward to fall will be bittersweet.  On one hand, I don’t want the great weather to end! On the other hand, I love the  changing colours of the trees…watching the foliage change while out on the trails will be spectacular.  In any case, it’s important to stay active with your dog.

Enjoying the outdoors with your dog doesn’t require any hard and fast rules of course but here are some tips for maximizing enjoyment for both of you:

  1. If you have a young dog or puppy, enjoy the outdoors while training them to heel beside you to sit when they stop and then to release and have fun.  Dogs get mental and physical stimulation while walking with you heeling nicely and when they are released (to do their business, sniff what ever they want without being walked-bring a long line and keep your feet still when you release them).  They are better adjusted overall and with their keen sense of smell can even help you appreciate your surroundings more completely.
  2. Keep your dog updated with vaccinations.  You never know what you’ll run into once outside the safe confines of your backyard or leash-free zone.
  3. Take care with the terrain.  Remember that sharp rocks pose a serious risk of injury for your dog…they’re barefoot after all!  Always pack a first-aid kit which can be purchased at The Dog Stop.  It’s smart to be prepared so take one of our Walks N Wags pet first aid courses so you know what to do if your dog is injured.
  4. Make sure your dog is wearing their ID tag.
  5. It’s tempting to let your dog go leash-free and roam, however it’s safer if they remain on the leash if they are not in a secure area.
  6. Poop n Scoop is not just for walking around your neighbourhood.  Bring poop bags.
  7. Keep your dog hydrated and look for signs of overexertion especially if we have a hot day.
  8. On longer outings, bring food and use as a treat while you do some recall work.  Your dog needs to keep his/her energy up.
  9. It’s getting light later in the morning and darker earlier in the evening.  It’s a good idea for both you and your dog to wear reflective gear.  A light up collar or leash is also a great ideal
  10. And finally, remember to have fun!
