The dog days of summer conjurs up images of dogs lying around panting through the hot, humid summer days.  While that is the current usage, that’s not how the saying originated.  ‘The dog days of summer’ is more closely aligned with the stars…the constellation Sirius actually which refers to the Dog Star:

Dog days of summerAnd now you know.

Over the years the meaning has changed.  During these hot, humid days ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen’ go out in the noon day sun according to another saying.  And when we observe the behaviour of dogs in the heat…panting, lying down, listless…we can adjust our schedule to take them out for walks in the early morning and evening when the conditions are milder. We need to monitor their fluid intake to make sure they get enough water and don’t become de-hydrated.  We need to adjust their exercise routine:  Limit strenuous exercise and monitor their behaviour cosely.  Stop if they show signs of distress.

With the long range forecast calling for hot days and warm nights, the dog days of summer will be with us through August. We’ve got over 4,000 square feet of air conditioned space here at The Dog Stop so if you want a comfortable place for your dog to get a break from the heat, contact us.
